The Best Security Suites for 2010

We've reviewed well over a dozen 2010 security suites—find out which will keep you safe and which to avoid.

The 2010 "model year" for security suites got an early start, with a couple of products already out in June of 2009. The February 2010 releases of McAfee Total Protection 2010 andNorton 360 Version 4.0 complete the collection, at least as far as major security vendors are concerned. We've reviewed sixteen security suites for 2010; read on to see which will keep you safe and which to avoid.

Of the early-birds Panda Internet Security 2010 made a decent showing, but eScan Internet Security Suite for Home Users Version 10 isn't ready to provide serious competition for any of the better-known contenders in the U.S. market. Much the same is true of K7 TotalSecurity Version 10.0: It's popular in Japan, but doesn't live up to the standards set by other major products here-at least it didn't bog down my test systems. Through the summer the suites kept rolling in, keeping me busy with all-out evaluations.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 and BitDefender Total Security 2010arrived almost simultaneously in August (although Kaspersky released its European version quite a bit earlier). Both offer powerful protection, but BitDefender has the edge in most areas, particularly antispam and parental control. But both suites did have a measurable impact on system performance in testing, possibly due to being crammed to the gills with bonus features that actually improve security.

F-Secure Internet Security 2010 and Trend Micro Internet Security Pro (version 3) also came through the gate together. F-Secure updated its interface, improved its detection, and added explicit exploit protection to its firewall. Trend Micro changed little from its previous incarnation. They can get away with standing still this time, but I hope for some innovation in the next Trend Micro suite.

The anti-malware scores for Norton Internet Security 2010 blew away the competition at the time, and it has shored up two notorious (if less important) traditional weak spots for Norton. Parental control now comes from the full-featured OnlineFamily.Norton, and the new spam filter component is quite accurate (a huge improvement). It remains our Editor's Choice, along with Norton 360 v 4.0 which offers the same level of security and adds PC Tuneup and a powerful and flexible backup system.

Last year ZoneAlarm combined their ZoneAlarm suite with ForceField virtualization technology and threw in backup, system tune-up and more to create a new product: ZoneAlarm Extreme Security. I was impressed enough to rate it Editor's Choice, shared with Norton's 2009 suite. I took a harder look at ZoneAlarm Extreme Security 2010 and found a few minor flaws. Nothing huge, and it offers some hot features like full disk encryption, but I'm not calling it Editor's Choice at this time.

I was excited to learn about FortiClient Endpoint Security Standard Edition 4.1, a totally free full security suite from Fortinet, better known for their Enterprise products. Unfortunately it's not truly free - you pay in reduced security. In particular its anti-malware scores were the lowest I've seen. And if you want direct tech support or anti-spam you pay extra.

CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2010 got a total facelift, a brand new user interface, but under that pretty surface its security protection was unimpressive. AVG Internet Security 9.0, avast! Internet Security 5.0, andPC Tools Internet Security 2010, three suites from vendors better known for their standalone anti-malware products, all made a better showing. In particular, PC Tools scored even higher than Norton in the anti-malware category.

McAfee Total Protection 2010 appeared on McAfee's web site last fall, but the actual fully-updated suite didn't come out until months later. It was worth the wait-it's an impressive suite overall with an especially strong antispam module. The Editors Choice designation goes to the two Norton suites, but you won't go wrong choosing McAfee, ZoneAlarm, or BitDefender.

avast! Internet Security 5.0

$59.95 direct
Fans of avast!'s antivirus can now get full security without going elsewhere for firewall and antispam protection. It's still just the essentials, but, if that's what you're looking for, it's a good choice.

AVG Internet Security 9.0

$69.99 direct
The latest suite from AVG is a distinct improvement over its predecessor. It integrates multiple new anti-malware technologies and its firewall problems are fixed. It's now a good choice, though not a challenger for Norton Internet Security 2010 and other top products.

BitDefender Total Security 2010

$79.95 direct (for 3 licenses)
BitDefender offers everything you expect in a suite and more. It's especially good at malware detection and offers better antispam, parental controls, and privacy protection than most suites. It affects performance more than some, but it's a very good choice for all-around protection.

CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2010

$69.99 direct (for 3 licenses)
CA hired experts to completely overhaul their suite's user interface. The result is unique, stunning and user-friendly. Alas, the security components housed in that gorgeous shell are hardly changed. They're still second-rate, and the suite's default settings can cause serious trouble for users. Maybe next year!

eScan Internet Security Suite for Home Users Version 10

$45.95 direct
Just installing this suite on malware-infested systems took days of effort. It scored okay on malware removal and blocking tests, but its proactive scan blocks many valid programs. The antispam and parental-control elements aren't worth consideration. This suite has a long way to go before it can challenge the top contenders.

F-Secure Internet Security 2010

$59.99 direct (for three licenses
The 2010 edition of F-Secure Internet Security has a new, easier-to-use interface and improved detection capabilities courtesy of a new protection network. This year's suite has less impact on performance than last year's, and its firewall now explicitly blocks exploits. In almost every security area it's a good choice—but not a great one.

FortiClient Endpoint Security Standard Edition 4.1

Free
FortiClient Endpoint Security Standard Edition 4.1 may not cost you any money, but its poor performance in dealing with malware and phishing attempts means that if you install it you'll pay the price of limited security.

K7 TotalSecurity Version 10.0

$44.96 direct (for 3 licenses)
This suite from Asian security giant K7 Computing needs work. It's not a resource hog and the spam filter is decent, but it needs to clean up malware more thoroughly and the firewall is fragile. Maybe the next version will do better.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2010

$79.95 direct (for 3 licenses)
Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 has everything you expect from a security suite and more. Its firewall is smart, the antivirus labs like it, and its "Safe Run" sandbox protects your system. It did not, however, ace our antispam and anti-malware tests, and it somewhat slowed system performance.

McAfee Total Protection 2010

$79.99 direct
Pleasant, streamlined interface. Network map with intruder alert, remote repair. Fast, accurate antispam. SiteAdvisor toolbar includes very good phishing protection. Very good malware blocking. Small performance impact. Online backup from Mozy.

Norton 360 Version 4.0

$79.99 direct
Norton 360 offers all the protection of the powerful Norton Internet Security suite. For $10 more, Norton 360 adds PC tuneup and a feature-rich local and online backup system, now with remote access and file sharing. Either version of the suite will be a fine choice for overall system protection.

Norton Internet Security 2010

$69.99 direct
Utilizing innovative technologies that crank up your PC's protection without bogging down its performance, Norton Internet Security 2010 remains the best overall security suite on the market.

Panda Internet Security 2010

$79.95 direct (for 3 licenses)
Panda Internet Security 2010 has less impact on system performance than its predecessor, and it's more effective at blocking phishing sites and removing malware. Otherwise, it's unchanged. I had serious problems getting it to install and run on some malware-infested systems, just like last year. But if you're installing on a clean system it can be a good choice.

PC Tools Internet Security 2010

$34.95 direct
Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 2010 is an impressive standalone app, and it's at the heart of PC Tool's Security suite. Not every component measures up to Spyware Doctor, but, overall, the suite is worth a look.

Trend Micro Internet Security Pro (version 3)

$69.95 direct
Trend Micro promised improvements in this year's version of its suite, particularly in performance impact, but overall I saw little change. Internet Security Pro still offers good protection, but it may be left behind if it doesn't move forward.

ZoneAlarm Extreme Security

$69.99 direct ZoneAlarm Extreme Security 2010 boasts impressive features, including full-disk encryption. But it slows performance, installing it is torture, and its anti-malware scores are only so-so. It's still a good product, but I'm not quite as thrilled with it as I was last year.

Google to send Internet Explorer 6 users packing come March

Google is continuing to kill off support for Internet Explorer 6 in its services; the search giant has announced that two more of its Web properties will stop supporting IE6 as of March 1. "Many other companies have already stopped supporting older browsers like Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers," a blog post on the Official Google Enterprise Blog begins to explain. "We're also going to begin phasing out our support, starting with Google Docs and Google Sites. As a result you may find that from March 1 key functionality within these products -- as well as new Docs and Sites features -- won't work properly in older browsers." Older browsers, according to Google, include anything prior to IE7, Firefox 3.0, Chrome 4.0, and Safari 3.0.

Although one might think this is a reaction to the Internet Explorer's vulnerabilities notably exploited in the recent series of Chinese-based attacks against Google and 30 other tech companies, which Microsoft hassince patched, the truth is Google has already done this with many of its other products. Google's Orkut and YouTube started phasing out IE6 support about six months ago and Google has been using Gmail to convert IE6 users to Chrome for over a year.

Google's stance on IE6 varies from Microsoft's because the search giant does not need to support Windows XP, the operating system with which IE6 first shipped, as long as Microsoft (which will support XP and IE6 until April 8, 2014). Google can thus pull IE6 support on its many Web properties and urge users to upgrade. Microsoft, on the other hand, which has stated time and time again that it wants to see IE6 disappear as much as anyone else, won't force anyone to upgrade (though it's worth noting that the software giant's Office Web Apps won't support IE6 either, just like Google Docs). Instead, it says the decision is ultimately up to the user, touting IE8's many features over IE6, particularly in the area of security, in an attempt to push users to upgrade. IE6 ended 2009 with a market share of 20.99 percent.

Microsoft admits Explorer used in Google China hack

Microsoft is working to patch the vulnerability through a software update Microsoft has admitted that its Internet Explorer was a weak link in the recent attacks on Google's systems that originated in China. The firm said in a blog post on Thursday that a vulnerability in the browser could allow hackers to remotely run programs on infected machines. Following the attack, Google threatened to end its operations in China. Microsoft has released preliminary guidance to mitigate the problem and is working on a formal software update. So far, Microsoft "has not seen widespread customer impact, rather only targeted and limited attacks exploiting Internet Explorer 6". "Based upon our investigations, we have determined that Internet Explorer was one of the vectors used in targeted and sophisticated attacks against Google and possibly other corporate networks," said Microsoft's director of security response Mike Reavey in the post. 'Unfortunate' Security firm McAfee told news agency AFP that the attacks on Google, which targeted Chinese human rights activists worldwide, showed a level of sophistication above that of typical, isolated cyber criminal efforts. McAfee's vice-president of threat research Dmitri Alperovitch told AFP that although the firm had "no proof that the Chinese are behind this particular attack, I think there are indications though that a nation-state is behind it". The recent spate of attacks was alleged to have hit more than 30 companies including Google and Adobe, but security firms have since said that such invasions are routine. Mr Reavey echoed this in the post. "Unfortunately cyber crime and cyber attacks are daily occurrences in the online world. Obviously, it is unfortunate that our product is being used in the pursuit of criminal activity. We will continue to work with Google, industry leaders and the appropriate authorities to investigate this situation."

به گفته گوگل بسیاری از این خدمات این شرکت مانند سایت های اسناد گوگل ( Google Docs) و خدمات طراحی سایت (Google Sites) از این تاریخ با اینترنت اکسپلورر ۶ سازگاری نخواهند داشت.

بر این اساس، عملکرد این سایت ها در اینترنت اکسپلورر ۶ دچار اختلال خواهد شد.

این شرکت به کاربران توصیه کرده است تا درصورت استفاده از اینترنت اکسپلورر ۶، مرورگر خود را هر چه زودتر ارتقا دهند.

کارشناسان می گویند مرورگر اینترنت اکسپلورر ۶ که به شرکت مایکروسافت تعلق دارد، به علت وجود یک حفره امنیتی در برابر حملات هکرها ضعف دارد.

Google takes on Facebook and Twitter with network site

Google has taken the wraps off its latest social network known as Buzz.

The service - integrated directly with its e-mail service Gmail - allows users to post status updates, share content and read and comment on friends posts.

The site pitches Google directly against rival networks such as Facebook, which has amassed nearly 400 million users since its launch in 2004.

Buzz will try to capitalise on the number of regular Gmail users, which is currently around 170 million people.

BBC News technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones said that the launch appeared to be a "major land grab by Google for the social networking space".

"They've launched Buzz with plenty of interesting new features, particularly for mobile users, but the real question is whether there's enough to entice social networkers away from sites like Facebook and Twitter," he said.

Rival Yahoo already offers a service that allows people to see updates from sites such as Twitter and Flickr from inside their Yahoo Mail page.

The new features are built directly into Google's free e-mail service Gmail.

Users can post private or public status updates - known as a buzz - and share content from other sites such as Twitter, YouTube, Flickr and Picassa.

Facebook has nearly 400 million users

The messages - highlighted with a Buzz symbol - are incorporated directly into a person's Gmail inbox. Private updates are automatically added to a user's profile page, whilst public updates will also be available to search engines.

The site also incorporates elements of Twitter, such as the ability to "follow" people that share updates, and features that appear in Facebook such as the ability to "like" content.

Buzz will also recommend content from people that it thinks you may like to see and incorporate it directly into a users content stream.

Google Buzz product manager Todd Jackson described it as "an entirely new world in Gmail" during a press event at Google headquarters in Mountain View.

The firm has also integrated it with its mapping service and mobile platforms. For example, it has launched a mobile application for phones running its operating system Android.

Status updates sent from phones will record the location of the sender and add it to the message.

Other users can then search public messages from their phone.

"You can see what people in your neighbourhood are saying," said Google's Vic Gundotra.

Public updates will also be added to Google Places, a directory of businesses that include reviews of restaurants and theatres, for example.

The firm has also built the technology into the mobile versions of its maps.

It is not the first time Google has tried to launch a social network.

In 2004, it released Orkut. However, while it has become big in countries such as Brazil and India, it has been overshadowed by sites such as Facebook elsewhere.

The firm also recently launched Google Wave, a tool that mixes e-mail, with instant messaging and the ability for several people to collaborate on documents in real time.

Facebook is currently the most popular social network worldwide.

Last week it rolled out a new site layout and design for parts of the service to make it easier to search messages and chat.

Windows 7 Hidden Gems

I’ve been living with Windows 7 for a good few months now and in that time have discovered a couple of little ‘hidden gems’ which I wanted to share with you:

Aero ShakeIn Windows 7, when you click on the title bar of any window and shake it every other open window gets minimised straight back in to your taskbar, reducing clutter on your screen.  This allows you to focus on the one window and then when ready shake it again and the other windows will reappear.

There are additional Aero user interface related features which make a welcome debut.  These include Aero Peek which allows you to immediately see what’s going on in an application just by hovering over the icon in the task bar and Aero Snap which quickly allows you to rearrange your desktop by slamming any open window against the left, right or top side of your screen; try it!

Sticky Notes
Proof, if needed, that some of the simplest applications make the largest differences to the end user experience.  One of the most commonly used applications on my PC used to be the incredibly simple ‘notepad’ as I find that my working life works a lot better if I simplify everything down in to lists.

Rather than jotting notes on random pieces of paper that will almost certainly get lost throughout the day I used to dump everything in notepad and ensure that every line was eventually cleared so I was left with a blank page before I went home.

Sticky notes have a similar application.  To get started click on the start menu and type in ‘sticky’ and begin typing tasks for the day or things to remember in to little post it notes that stick to your screen.  When complete either close or minimise the application to get back to the job in hand, safe in the knowledge that once Sticky Notes are reopened, these tasks will reappear exactly as you left them.  When a task has been completed or the note simply isn’t needed, it can be deleted with one click of the mouse.

Improved CalculatorWindows 7 calculator has improved considerably; now rather than being an arithmetic only affair, it can be operated in four modes – Standard, Scientific, Programmer and Statistical.  It can also perform unit conversion, for example grams to ounces, metres to feet and Celsius to Fahrenheit along with a couple of unexpected features such as the ability to calculate the number of days between two dates or the value of your mortgage repayment.   Surely in the next version of Windows the calculator application will finally gain graphical capabilities.

Windows Disk Image Burner
For some time now the preferred method of copying and storing CD’s and DVD’s has been by using an ISO file; a single image which includes the contents of an entire disk.  Reading these files used to require a specific application (the likes of which I’ve covered previously in Click) but every version of Windows 7 now includes support for these straight out the box; simply double click on the ISO file that you wish to burn, insert a blank CD or DVD and you’re done.

اندازه کوچک‌تر (Down Sampling) نیز استفاده می‌شود.  اگر مقدار حافظه کامپیوترتان بیش از دو گیگابایت است و معمولاً روی عکس‌هایی با دقت بالا (مانند عکس‌هایی که با دوربین‌های دیجیتال خودتان می‌گیرید) کار می‌کنید، بهتر است مقدار Cache Levels را تا هشت افزایش دهید، اما اگر مقدار حافظه کامپیوترتان زیاد نیست و همچنین اگر روی عکس‌های با دقت پايين (يک تا سه مگابایت) کار می‌کنید، کاهش مقدار Cache Levels تا يک یا دو، انتخاب بهتری برای شما خواهد بود، زیرا می‌توانید به سرعت به جای Cache کردن عکس‌ها، آن‌ها را ذخیره کنید (تصوير 2). »» حواستان به مقدار حافظه مصرفی باشد   تصوير 3  فتوشاپ عاشق حافظه (RAM) است و اگر جلوی آن را نگیرید تا آخرین بیت حافظه کامپیوترتان را مصرف خواهد کرد. بنابراین باید «مقدار حافظه‌ای که به فتوشاپ اختصاص می‌دهید را محدود کنید». تنظیمات مربوط به محدود کردن مقدار حافظه مصرفی نیز در Edit>Preferences>Performance قرار دارد. مقدار حافظه کلی سیستم در این قسمت نمایش داده می‌شود.  اگر هنگامي که از نرم‌افزار فتوشاپ استفاده می‌کنید، برنامه‌های دیگری را باز نمي‌کنید (به‌عنوان مثال، Firefox برای جست‌وجو در اینترنت یا Media Player برای گوش دادن موسیقی و...) و همچنین اگر مقدار حافظه کامپیوترتان حدود دو تا سه گیگابایت است، می‌توانید این درصد را تا 75-80 درصد نیز افزایش دهید. در غیر این صورت بهتر است این مقدار را از پنجاه درصد بالاتر نبرید (تصوير 3). »» از Scratch Disk مناسب استفاده کنید   تصوير 4 فتوشاپ می‌تواند به همان صورتي که از حافظه استفاده می‌کند، بخشی از حافظه ثابت کامپیوتر را نیز به‌عنوان یک حافظه جانبی به کار گیرد. برنامه فتوشاپ این حافظه را Scratch Disk می‌نامد.  به صورت پیش‌فرض این حافظه از درایو ویندوز یا (معمولاً) همان درایو C کسر می‌شود، اما درایو C به‌طور معمول فضای خالی چنداني ندارد و استفاده از فضای خالی آن به‌عنوان Scratch Disk موجب کند شدن کل سیستم می‌شود.  بنابراین بهتر است درایو پیش‌فرض را به یکی از درایوها‌ی دیگر (با فضای خالی بیشتر) تغییر دهید و همین‌طور ترتیب درایوها را طوری تنظیم کنید (با دکمه‌های مثلثی شکل سمت راست فهرست) که درایو C آخرین درایو باشد (تصوير 4). »» قابلیت پیش‌نمایش فونت‌ها را خاموش کنید   تصوير 5 کاربران فتوشاپ، به خصوص طراحان، علاقه دارند فونت‌های زیادی را روی کامپیوترشان نصب کنند تا همیشه هنگام کار فونت‌هاي موردنياز را در دسترس داشته باشند. هنگامي که در فتوشاپ روی منوی فونت‌ها کلیک می‌کنید، به محض باز شدن این منو، پیش‌نمایشی از فونت‌های در دسترس به نمایش در می‌آید. خاموش کردن پیش‌نمایش فونت‌ها می‌تواند تأثیر زیادی روی بالا رفتن کارایی فتوشاپ داشته باشد.  برای این‌کار به مسیر Edit>Preferences>Type رفته و مانند آنچه در تصویر می‌بینید، گزینه «Font Preview Size» را غیرفعال کنید (تصوير 5). »» خاموش کردن تصاویر کوچک (Thumbnails) داخل پانل‌ها    تصوير 6 فراهم کردن پیش‌نمایش لایه‌ها در پانل‌لایه‌ها و همچنین در پانل‌های دیگر مانند Channels و Paths موجب استفاده از حافظه می‌شود. به خصوص هنگامي که روی لایه‌های مختلف عکس کار می‌کنید، فتوشاپ برای هر تغییر جدید، لایه‌های مربوط به آن را نیز دوباره پردازش می‌کند و با افزایش تعداد لایه‌های تصویر موجب استفاده بیشتر از حافظه می‌شود.  در صورت تمايل مي‌توانيد این پیش‌نمایش‌ها را به‌طور کل خاموش کنید، دست‌کم کوچک‌ترین اندازه ممکن را برای آن‌ها انتخاب کنید. برای این‌کار باید در هر پانل‌، منوی Panel Options را باز کرده و مانند تصویر، گزینه None یا کوچک‌ترین اندازه را انتخاب کنید (تصوير 6). »» از فرمان Purge استفاده کنید   تصوير 7 هنگامي که در حال کار هستید، فتوشاپ اطلاعات تصویر برای فرمان Undo، حافظه موقت یا Clipboard و مراحل تاریخچه را ذخيره می‌کند.  این اطلاعات موجب مصرف حافظه می‌شود، به خصوص اگر زمان زیادی را روی یک عکس صرف کنید یا این‌که تعداد مراحل زیادی را برای تاریخچه اختصاص داده باشید، این مصرف حافظه زیاد خواهد بود. برای کاهش اطلاعاتی که موجب مصرف حافظه می‌شوند، به مسیر (Edit>Purge>(option بروید. منظور از Option حافظه موردنظر شما برای خالی شدن است. توجه کنید که در صورت حذف هر یک از اطلاعات، دیگر امکان دسترسی به آن‌ها را نخواهید داشت (تصوير 7). »» قابلیت هماهنگی فایل‌های PSD و PSB را روشن کنید   تصوير 8 ‏Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility قابلیتی در فتوشاپ است که به موجب آن، یک نسخه کپی یکی‌شده از لایه‌ها (Flattened Copy) همراه فایل ذخیره می‌شود تا اطمینان پیدا کنید که فایل PSD یا PSB شما که در نسخه جدید فتوشاپ ذخیره شده است، در نسخه‌های قدیمی‌تر نیز بدون مشکل باز خواهد شد. این‌کار اندکی موجب زیادتر شدن حجم فایل‌های شما می‌شود.  در ضمن اگر بخواهید از قابلیت Edit in Photoshop نرم‌افزار لایتروم (Photoshop Lightroom) استفاده کنید، باید حتماً این گزینه روشن باشد. برای تغییر این گزینه به مسیر Photoshop>Preferences>File Handling بروید (تصوير 8). »» فتوشاپ خود را شلوغ نکنید   تصوير 9  اگرچه روی اینترنت الحاقات رایگان (و در ایران در DVDهای فروشگاه‌ها الحاقات غیررایگان) زیادی را می‌توانید پیدا کنید، اما باید مراقب باشید که این تعداد از امکانات جانبی در دسترس (فونت‌ها، قلم‌موها، شکل‌های آماده، استایل‌ها، پلاگین‌ها و...) نباید شما را فریب دهند.  فتوشاپ خود را خلوت نگه دارید. قرار نیست هر چه در دسترس شما است روی فتوشاپ نصب کنید. نصب تعداد زیادی پلاگین و الحاقات جانبی، موجب کند شدن کارایی فتوشاپ می‌شود. حرفه‌ای‌ها ترجیح می‌دهند تنها چند پلاگین را روی فتوشاپ نصب کرده و از همان چند گزینه هزاران نتیجه مختلف را به دست آورند (تصوير 9). »» بازگرداندن تنظیمات اولیه فتوشاپ   تصوير 10   اگر تنظیمات فتوشاپ خود را طوری تغییر داده‌اید که برای شما دردسر ساز شده است، احتمالاً این ترفند کوچک برای شما مفید خواهد بود. هنگامي که برنامه در حال اجرای دوباره است، دکمه‌های Alt+Ctrl+Shift را نگه دارید.  با این‌کار به محض بالا آمدن فتوشاپ، از شما سؤال می‌شود که آیا می‌خواهید فایل تنظیمات برنامه حذف شده و برنامه با تنظیمات پیش‌فرض اولیه اجرا شود؟ در صورت OK کردن این پرسش، تمام تنظیمات تغییریافته حذف شده و فتوشاپ را با تنظیمات اولیه آن مشاهده خواهید کرد (تصوير 10).
